Compare Samsung Galaxy S II And HTC

Here’s a good question for Android enthusiasts out there. Which phone should you choose and not spend a ton of money? How about the Samsung Galaxy S2 or the HTC One S? Which of those are better fit with your pocket and your wallet? Well let’s find out shall we?

On the first look the two seem to be quite similar. Both the SGS 2 and the HTC are sporting 4.3 inch AMOLED displays. They both have dual core powered processors. Both of them are equipped with an 8 MP camera and they also have the same battery (capacity-wise). That’s only on the surface, if you have the patience to read on, we’re going to dig a bit deeper to see what are the key differences that set apart these two great smartphones.

While the HTC One S has been launched in 2012 it means that it’s younger by more than half an year compared to the Samsung Galaxy S2, but the two were targeted for the same market so therefore are definitely worth comparing. The SGS 2 was the best phone you could possibly purchase last summer while the HTC One S came with some cool modifications and an upgraded design which should definitely convince you of its worth.

In terms of design the HTC One S is a thing of beauty. A thin and compact yet highly rigid frame gives it a premium look. The anodized or oxidized aluminum makes it look extremely cool. We must say that in appearance the plastic built of the SGS 2 simply pales in comparison. Not to mention that in terms of weight they both are quite similar.

Not only that the One S feels more premium compared to the Galaxy S2 but it also has a more ergonomic design due to the rounded corners and curved chassis. This also improves one hand operations since you can reach with your thumb just about anywhere on the screen.

The design factor should have been in HTC’s bag long ago but there’s one little snag that keeps it from overwhelming the SGS 2. First of all the HTC, despite its good looks, lacks flexibility and usage. You won’t be allowed to expand its memory more than its standard 16 GB. By comparison the Galaxy S2 comes with a microSD slot which is compatible with 32 GB cards which means it can expand its memory to a total of 48 GB. We also would like to “thank” HTC manufacturers for sealing the battery compartment. This means that the HTC One S will only accept micro-SIM cards.

On the other hand the “poor” design of the Samsung Galaxy S2 accepts it all. You can pop in the microSD card, which means that you won’t be needing cloud storage and other things to worry about. Not to mention that you can a put in a normal SIM card and you can also carry an extra battery with you.

In terms of display, the Samsung and the HTC are quite alike (since both are sporting AMOLED screens made by Samsung). The difference stands in the matrix arrangement. Samsung has chosen the regular RGB matrix for the Galaxy S2 while HTC has gone for a PenTile arrangement which gives it a superior resolution of 960 x 540 over the 480 x 800 one on the SGS 2. The PenTile arrangement makes the screen mounted on the HTC One S to look better, with brighter colors which also gives it an edge for outdoor usage. Both screens exhibit oversaturated colors which we’ve grown accustomed to with Super AMOLED screens. Overall, we must say that, due to the PenTile matrix arrangement the screen on the HTC One S looks a tiny bit better than the one mounted on the SGS 2.

As for interface, well, there’s no competition. We already know that the HTC Sense is by far the greatest UI on the smartphone market. First of all HTC Sense 4.0 has been optimized and fully integrated with Android 4.0 ICS, by comparison the TouchWiz interface from Samsung looks like…Windows 95. It doesn’t look like they’ve been optimizing it enough. It looks like it’s been slapped over the ICS without any kinds of improvements.

Talking hardware, both phones are quite close. On one side we have Samsung’s own 1.2 GHz dual-core Exynos processor which can still cut it in 2012 and make the SGS 2 handle like a dream. On the other hand we have the 1.5 dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor mounted on the HTC One S. overall both phones are quite as fast and won’t have any kind of trouble with anything you might want to run on each of them. True, the HTC One S might be a little faster and has scored a bit more in our Quadrand and AnTutu benchmarks but the difference is barely noticeable. On the graphics department the One S has the upper hand and that’s only because of the higher clock speed.

Considering that prices are about the same we must say that the One S has proved to be superior.
